2017

Mike orders the first beer-making kit and uses the bath tub as the fermentation room. The first few batches didn’t make anyone sick, but more importantly it sparked the interest of good friends James and Dev, which set everything to follow in motion..

  • Very soon after, the three mates had joined forces to make beer on a weekly basis from Dev and James’ basement in West London, with the goal being to improve the process every week. Quickly, fresh wort was subbed out for all grain – they now had extra flexibility with their recipes and were getting adventurous with hops varietals too! In an attempt to eliminate variables, the kit saw frequent upgrades, adding wort chillers, fermenter jackets, bigger kettles, and other items.

  • Friends joined on Saturdays to help brew a batch, bottle a batch, and try a new batch – the community was born, along with the name Co.bru!

  • The first Co.bru braai and beer tasting took place, involving some absolute cracker beers – Bek Oil, T-Money Honey, Gabriel’s Lucky Pot, Tomb Stone Fruit, among others! One was bitter enough to knock your socks off and we’ll never know the ABV of another, but all round there was enough “gees” to warrant making more and ramping up the production!

THE CO.BRU STORY

Co.bru was founded by three mates whose friendship started when they first met over 20 years ago at school in Cape Town. Following different paths after school, they reunited in London where their love for friends, good times and tasty beer saw them spending a lot of time together.

What started as a weekly homebrew club back in 2017 has evolved into a medium for bringing people together through an increasing number of products, services, experiences and charitable efforts. It was community that ignited Co.bru and it is the driving force of Co.bru today.

The guys are excited and more people are asking for Co.bru! So what do they do? Well they incorporate a company, of course! Mike gets licensed to sell beer and gets his IBD General Brewing Certificate, while they upgrade their facilities to the infamous Bermondsey Beer Mile for a new standard of brewing quality.

  • The Co.bru IPA (forerunner of the American Pale Ale) is born, and so too is the recognisable branding and colour palettes you still see today.

  • Co.bru gets involved in the organisation of London’s favourite party, Salubrious Sports Day!

  • Co.bru gets it’s wholesalers’ licence to sell to pubs, retailers and other businesses. In another big milestone, the guys brew their first 1,000L brew!

  • Mike puts a pause on his career in finance to focus on brewing and picks up a Supervisor role at popular Notting Hill pub, known for it’s great craft beer selections (and being Freddie Mercury’s pub of choice back in the day).

Brewing production upgrades again to a state-of-the-art facility based in East Sussex. Kegs and cans (330ml and 440ml) are now on the market.

Co.bru launches its keg & pourer rental service for our community’s events and parties.

  • The proudly South African Pale Ale is released with SA’s finest hops being sourced and shipped directly from SAB Hop Farms.

  • Co.bru collaborates with long-time friends, Idiotas Football Club, as their official kit and beer partners.

  • Nick joins the team to take Co.bru’s marketing and social media communications to new heights!

  • Co.bru Game Day Lager is launched, proving to be the biggest hit yet!

2022 - 2023

New community events are rolled out to the London community, including Co.bru Shootout, Barge Party and Bok Day Groove fan parks for the Rugby World Cup matches.

  • The second and third Sports Day events were successful, resulting in £45,000 donated to Ithuba Foundation since the partnership began.

As 2023 edges towards 2024, the team are busy looking at new ways to grow the community and bring more joy to our members. If you ever want to get in touch with new ideas or opportunities to collaborate, please feel free to reach out to us at info@co-bru.com.

A final note from the Co.bru team:

If you ever wondered what “Co.bru” even means, it’s short for “Collaborative Brewing Company”; a name suggested by one of our friends and unanimously agreed on by the community in the earliest days. It’s an everyday reminder of why we do this and why we love it. Co.bru and community can be used in the same breath; it is the thread that binds us.
